In the process of scarification, scars are formed by cutting or branding the skin. There are many reasons why people may turn to scarification. Aesthetically, scarifications are usually more visible on darker skinned people than tattoos. Also, unlike tattoos, scarifications are a product of one's own body.

There are also religious and social reasons for scarification. According to some tribal belief in Africa, producing scars on newborn children helps preventing vision related illness. There may also be religious expressions used in the scarification process.

Scarification is not a precise art; there are many variables, such as skin type, depth of the cut, and how the wound is treated while healing, that make the outcome somewhat unpredictable.

The body creates the scar, not the artist; it is important to keep in mind that a method that works well on one person may not work so well on another. Also, the scars tend to spread a bit as they heal, so scarifications are usually relatively simple designs -- small details can easily get swallowed up in the healing process

Chernobyl $200 Billion
On April 26, 1986, the world witnessed the costliest accident in history. The Chernobyl disaster has been called the biggest socio-economic catastrophe in peacetime history. 50% of the area of Ukraine is in some way contaminated. Over 200,000 people had to be evacuated and resettled while 1.7 million people were directly affected by the disaster. The death toll attributed to Chernobyl, including people who died from cancer years later, is estimated at 125,000. The total costs including cleanup, resettlement, and compensation to victims has been estimated to be roughly $200 Billion. The cost of a new steel shelter for the Chernobyl nuclear plant will cost $2 billion alone. The accident was officially attributed to power plant operators who violated plant procedures and were ignorant of the safety requirements needed.

Space Shuttle Columbia $13 Billion

The Space Shuttle Columbia was the first space worthy shuttle in NASA’s orbital fleet. It was destroyed during re-entry over Texas on February 1, 2003 after a hole was punctured in one of the wings during launch 16 days earlier. The original cost of the shuttle was $2 Billion in 1978. That comes out to $6.3 Billion in today’s dollars. $500 million was spent on the investigation, making it the costliest aircraft accident investigation in history. The search and recovery of debris cost $300 million.
In the end, the total cost of the accident (not including replacement of the shuttle) came out to $13 Billion according to the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Prestige Oil Spill $12 Billion

On November 13, 2002, the Prestige oil tanker was carrying 77,000 tons of heavy fuel oil when one of its twelve tanks burst during a storm off Galicia, Spain. Fearing that the ship would sink, the captain called for help from Spanish rescue workers, expecting them to take the ship into harbour. However, pressure from local authorities forced the captain to steer the ship away from the coast. The captain tried to get help from the French and Portuguese authorities, but they too ordered the ship away from their shores. The storm eventually took its toll on the ship resulting in the tanker splitting in half and releasing 20 million gallons oil into the sea.
According to a report by the Pontevedra Economist Board, the total cleanup cost $12 billion.

Challenger Explosion $5.5 Billion

The Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after takeoff due on January 28, 1986 due to a faulty O-ring. It failed to seal one of the joints, allowing pressurized gas to reach the outside. This in turn caused the external tank to dump its payload of liquid hydrogen causing a massive explosion. The cost of replacing the Space Shuttle was $2 billion in 1986 ($4.5 billion in today’s dollars). The cost of investigation, problem correction, and replacement of lost equipment cost $450 million from 1986-1987 ($1 Billion in today’s dollars).

Piper Alpha Oil Rig $3.4 Billion

The world’s worst off-shore oil disaster. At one time, it was the world’s single largest oil producer, spewing out 317,000 barrels of oil per day. On July 6, 1988, as part of routine maintenance, technicians removed and checked safety valves which were essential in preventing dangerous build-up of liquid gas. There were 100 identical safety valves which were checked. Unfortunately, the technicians made a mistake and forgot to replace one of them. At 10 PM that same night, a technician pressed a start button for the liquid gas pumps and the world’s most expensive oil rig accident was set in motion.
Within 2 hours, the 300 foot platform was engulfed in flames. It eventually collapsed, killing 167 workers and resulting in $3.4 Billion in damages

Exxon Valdez $2.5 Billion

The Exxon Valdez oil spill was not a large one in relation to the world’s biggest oil spills, but it was a costly one due to the remote location of Prince William Sound (accessible only by helicopter and boat). On March 24, 1989, 10.8 million gallons of oil was spilled when the ship’s master, Joseph Hazelwood, left the controls and the ship crashed into a Reef. The cleanup cost Exxon $2.5 billion.

B-2 Bomber Crash $1.4 Billion

Here we have our first billion dollar accident (and we’re only #7 on the list). This B-2 stealth bomber crashed shortly after taking off from an air base in Guam on February 23, 2008. Investigators blamed distorted data in the flight control computers caused by moisture in the system. This resulted in the aircraft making a sudden nose-up move which made the B-2 stall and crash. This was 1 of only 21 ever built and was the most expensive aviation accident in history. Both pilots were able to eject to safety.

MetroLink Crash $500 Million

On September 12, 2008, in what was one of the worst train crashes in California history, 25 people were killed when a Metrolink commuter train crashed head-on into a Union Pacific freight train in Los Angeles. It is thought that the Metrolink train may have run through a red signal while the conductor was busy text messaging. Wrongful death lawsuits are expected to cause $500 million in losses for Metrolink

Tanker Truck vs Bridge $358 Million

On August 26, 2004, a car collided with a tanker truck containing 32,000 liters of fuel on the Wiehltal Bridge in Germany. The tanker crashed through the guardrail and fell 90 feet off the A4 Autobahn resulting in a huge explosion and fire which destroyed the load-bearing ability of the bridge. Temporary repairs cost $40 million and the cost to replace the bridge is estimated at $318 Million.

Titanic $150 Million

The sinking of the Titanic is possibly the most famous accident in the world. But it barely makes our list of top 10 most expensive. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage and was considered to be the most luxurious ocean liner ever built. Over 1,500 people lost their lives when the ship ran into an iceberg and sunk in frigid waters. The ship cost $7 million to build ($150 million in today’s dollars).

It’s nearly every woman’s dream to be swathed in chocolate, and the fantasy was fulfilled for some lucky models dressed as chocolate superheroes in New York. Lara Croft, Bat Girl, Poison Ivy, Dark Phoenix, Storm from the X-Men, Wonder Woman, and a warrior princess among others walked the catwalk dressed in the finest of designer chocolate.

The 3-day edible chocolate superhero fashion extravaganza featured models dressed very carefully in their chocolate attire, created by chocolatiers and pastry chefs for the catwalk show on the Hudson River.

Nearly everything the models wore was edible, and the chance for wardrobe malfunction was high.

The edible catwalk extravaganza launches the annual New York Chocolate Show, an event where 60 chocolatiers offer free tastings and professional demonstrations of chocolate recipes. There are also culinary demonstrations being taught all weekend by pastry masters like Colleen Grapes of Red Cat and Martin Howard of Brasserie 8 1/2.

Sylvie Douce and her husband Francois Jeantet first organized the show in France but soon moved to New York to attract a global audience.

“I decided to found this show with Francois, my husband, my ‘chocolate lover,’ because everybody eats chocolate in the world and chocolate makes you happy.” Sylvie said.

“It’s like your fantasy show.” said Jackie Gordon, owner of Divalicious Chocolates. “You go in and there’s chocolate, chocolate everywhere.”

Are you thinking of getting another ring in your ear, nose or belly button? Check out these pictures from the Thaipusan festival (3 days, 1 million people) and see piercings that have been taken to the extreme. Though they say that nothing can disfigure a beautiful face, don’t try this at home.

The Thaipusam is an old Hindu festival that has gained popularity in the western world because of the lengths its followers go through to prove their religious devotion. It is celebrated annually on the full moon of the month of Thai according to the Hindu calendar (usually in January or February); therefore Thaipusam 2009 will fall on 8th February. The festival is observed mostly by the Tamils in South India, but there are big celebrations among the Tamil communities worldwide. The most well-known ones are in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore that draw a million devotees and tourists each year.

The festival celebrates both the birthday of Lord Murugan (also called Lord Subramaniam) and his victory over the evil demon Soorapadman by stabbing him with a spear. Therefore the spear is a common symbol during the Thaipusam, usually pierced horizontally through the sides of a devotee’s mouth and vertically through the tongue.

The spears used can be up to one metre long, making turing around a bit dodgy. The significance of piercing the metal rod through the mouth for the devotee is denouncing the gift of speech temporarily and channeling one’s energy toward God. Preparations for the festival include silence, prayers, fasting and abstinence.

As some of the images show, more is more. Lord Subramaniam is the universal granter of wishes but if a devotee’s wish has been granted (or he or she wants to repent for past sins), then a vow has to be fulfilled in return, namely to participate in the Thaipusam by carrying a ‘burden’ (kavadi). Not honoring the vow is considered bad luck. The burden can manifest itself in various forms but a common practice is to carry them in little silver pots, each ‘burden’ tethered or hooked to the body.

The man pictured in the first image has chosen the weightiest kavadi there is – a heavy and heavily decorated portable altar that is hooked into the flesh by dozens of metal rods. It weighs around 15 kg, and given that devotees have to walk from one temple to the next, often for kilometers, this task alone would be taxing enough

This picture shows that hooked into the flesh means hooked into the flesh! The devotee is able to endure the pain because he is put into a trance by a swami (a yogi or guru). Just watching can be quite the experience and many a bystander has found himself in a trance as well! Apart from feeling no pain, no blood is shed and no scars will remain.

Some devotees pull carts with the hooks on their backs and really strain themselves. But all kavadi bearers have a whole following of family and friends around who will help them each step of the way.

The swastika is an ancient sign that was first used in Neolithic India, that’s around 7000 BC! The name comes from Sanskrit svastika, literally meaning ’something associated with well-being’, or what we would call a lucky charm. It is a sacred symbol for more than one billion religious followers worldwide, namely for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and others.

No, this is not some celebration of masochists, though it may look like it. It is actually the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, a religious festival believed to bring blessings to all followers. The followers comprise mainly of Chinese in Phuket, Thailand, who follow a strict vegan or vegetarian diet for 10 days to gain favor with their gods and for spiritual cleansing. This is accompanied by sacred rituals at Chinese temples and shrines around the island. Stalls of vegan food are set up throughout Phuket City, and even non-vegans will be quite tempted with the sumptuous variety of vegetarian food.

Obviously the most distinct feature of this festival is the amount of ‘pain’ involved with seriously crazy and insane body piercings. And I am not just talking about needles but unthinkable objects like guns, umbrellas and saws! Not sure exactly what this is supposed to represent, but my guess is that it represents some level of self-retribution for the things they have done wrong in their lives. I have seen many crazy and painful stuff, but these pictures are probably one of the most extreme that I have seen in awhile. Careful, very graphic pictures follow.
